The six-to-eleven class on W. Broad St
Our Mineola kids class is for children aged 6 to 11 and runs at 130 W. Broad St, in the same building where our Mineola after-school program and our teen and adult classes meet. Students train in traditional karate technique, practical self-defense, and partner drills with black belt instructors. A class has a bow-in, a warm-up, technique taught in steps, and correction when a stance is wrong — that is what martial arts instruction looks like at this age.
Six to eleven is the stretch where a child stops being a preschooler on a mat and starts being a student. They can hold several instructions at once, take a correction, and remember a sequence from one week to the next — but they are still young enough that whether they think of themselves as someone who can do hard things is being decided right now. That is why the class exists as its own thing rather than being folded in with the little kids or the teenagers.
If your child is nervous, that is the normal state of a first class and it is planned for. They bow in, line up with the other students, and are shown what to do before they are asked to do it. No child is put in front of the room to perform, and nobody is expected to arrive already knowing a stance.
Mineola families also have the after-school program in this building: transportation provided from school, then snack, gametime, and homework help, serving Mineola schools. That covers the afternoon. The kids class is the karate instruction, on the same belt curriculum — one address for both, which is what makes the two workable together.
