Benefits · Why join ProComp
What a karate class at our Tyler, Gilmer, and Mineola academies actually gives a student — and why families across East Texas choose to train here.
The short version
The kicks and strikes are the fun part. The reasons families stay are the things that show up at the dinner table: a child who focuses, a teenager who stands up straight, an adult who finally has an hour that is only about themselves.
For kids
Parents usually sign a child up for the kicks. A few months in, the thing they notice at home is different: a kid who listens the first time, who stands a little taller, who has something of their own to be proud of. That is what a structured karate class does — it teaches focus, discipline, and respect in a room where those things are practiced every single week.
A karate class asks a child to listen, hold still, and follow instructions for the whole hour. That is a muscle, and it gets stronger the same way any other one does.
Earning a stripe or a new belt in front of the class is a real, public accomplishment — and it belongs to them. Confidence built on something a child actually did lasts a lot longer than praise.
Balance, footwork, kicking, and safe falling build strength and body awareness — and it never feels like exercise, because they're having too much fun doing it.
Students bow in, address instructors properly, and learn that courtesy is part of the training, not an extra rule bolted on top of it.
The belt ranks give a child a visible finish line. They learn to pick a goal, work toward it, and test for it — the same pattern they'll need for everything after this.
Nobody gets a belt on the first try. Kids learn that showing up after a frustrating class is how progress actually happens.
For teens
The teenage years are when confidence gets tested — at school, online, and everywhere in between. A martial arts academy gives a teenager a place where effort is noticed, where they can be a leader to the younger students, and where the training is genuinely hard in a way that feels good.
Older students hold pads, help newer classmates, and set the example for the kids below them. Being someone the room looks to is a different kind of confidence than winning a match.
Teens train in a room where control, effort, and attitude matter. That standard tends to follow them out the door.
Sparring rounds and conditioning are a serious workout — and a far better place to put a long school day than a phone screen.
ProComp is a sport martial arts school. Our athletes train for and compete on the NASKA and PROMAC circuits, and students have earned more than 100 National and 285 Regional Championships since 2020.
Teens learn skills that are actually usable, drilled until they're automatic — and they learn when not to need them.
Training partners become a comradery of their own, and class becomes a standing appointment that isn't a screen.
For adults
Most adults walk in thinking they're too old, too out of shape, or too late to start. They aren't — and the training meets them where they are. Our adult program covers fitness, practical self-defense, and the stress relief of an hour that is entirely about the technique in front of you.
Karate is a full-body workout — legs, core, shoulders, stamina, and mobility — that builds over months instead of punishing you in the first week.
An hour of focused, physical training is the most reliable reset there is. You leave tired in the good way, with your head clear.
Adults learn real self-defense: awareness, distance, escapes, and strikes, drilled with partners until they're instinct instead of theory.
The kind of confidence that comes from knowing what you're capable of — not from a compliment.
Our adult program includes women's fitness and self-defense classes for anyone who wants to train specifically around that.
You can start at zero. Beginners train alongside black belts every week, and nobody expects you to walk in already knowing anything.
Why join ProComp
Plenty of places teach martial arts. Here is what's actually different about training at ProComp in Tyler, Gilmer, and Mineola.
Every academy offers a free trial class. Sign up online, come train, and see whether the school fits your family before you commit to anything.
ProComp is led by founder and Master Instructor Clayton Watkins (6th Degree Blackbelt, USA National Team Coach) and Chief Instructor Joe Johnson (4th Degree Blackbelt, Co-Owner). Students learn from instructors who have competed and coached at the national level.
ProComp is a sport martial arts school, not a daycare with pads. Students have earned more than 100 National and 285 Regional Championships since 2020, and our athletes compete on the NASKA and PROMAC circuits.
Kids, teens, and adults train in the same school, in the same positive culture — so a parent can train while their child does, instead of running two schedules.
Gilmer and Mineola run afterschool programs with transportation provided, plus snack, gametime, and homework help. In Tyler, a 2-day-per-week afterschool class is held for Caldwell Arts Academy students, who are walked over from the academy next door.
Tyler at 117 University Place, Gilmer at 202 Buffalo St, and Mineola at 130 W. Broad St — three convenient locations serving families across East Texas.
