Karate for adults, in the middle of town

Our Mineola adult class is for students 18 and over at 130 W. Broad St, in the same building where our Mineola kids and teens classes meet. Traditional karate, taught by black belt instructors: stances, blocks, strikes, kicks, forms, partner work and practical self-defense, with belt and stripe tests marking progress.

Most adults arrive with the same worry — that everyone else in the room will be better than them, or younger than them, or both. On any given evening that is not true. This class is built for the person who has not done anything physical in a decade and the person who wants to be pushed, and both start with the same basics, because the basics are the thing that never stops being worth practising.

No prior experience is required and no fitness level is required. The first class is a bow-in and basics, not a test, and you are not asked to arrive already able to do anything. What you are asked to do is show up and try the technique as it is given to you, which is the whole skill for the first several months.

The building is also where our Mineola after-school program runs for Mineola schools in the afternoon. Adults who are parents here often train on the same trip as the child — one address on W. Broad St, one trip out of the house instead of two.

Who the Mineola adult class is for

It is for adults 18 and over in Mineola who have never trained, and for adults who trained years ago and stopped. It is for the parent who has been driving to W. Broad St for a child's class and has started to wonder what the other side of the mat is like. If you are 12 to 17, ask about the teens class; if your child is 6 to 11, the kids class.

It is not a weight-loss program, a boot camp or medical advice — it is a karate class. You will sweat and you will get fitter, but the fitness comes with the skill. If you are carrying an injury or managing a condition, tell the instructor before your first class and speak to your doctor about what you are cleared to do. The academy also runs women's fitness and self-defence classes; those are separate from the adult karate class, so ask which one you want when you call.

Inside the class

What a Mineola adult class involves

A class, not a brochure — this is the shape of it.

  • Technique, corrected

Stances, blocks, strikes, kicks and forms, taught in steps and repeated until they hold up. An instructor tells you exactly what is wrong and how to fix it, in plain words, in a room where everyone else is working on their own correction.

  • Practical self-defense

Distance, positioning and a first response, drilled with a partner. Real training, not a list of moves to memorise, and not a promise that a few weeks of classes makes anyone safe in every situation.

  • An hour that is not the gym

The class is physical and you will get fitter doing it. What we will not claim is that it is a fitness program or a weight-loss plan; it is karate, and the conditioning arrives attached to the technique.

  • Partner work and control

Adults work with each other and learn to stop a technique short. Karate is physical and bumps happen — control is taught as a skill in its own right, with an instructor watching the pair.

  • Three things an adult can add on

XMA, weapons training and competition teams are open to any student in our kids, teens or adults classes — no tryout, no invitation needed — and they run as their own scheduled classes at all three academies, Mineola included. Our students compete at NASKA and PROMAC events. Call 903-494-7040 for which are running now.

We do not publish class days or times here, because a printed schedule goes stale quietly. Call 903-494-7040 and you will get the current days for the Mineola adult class.

Questions adults ask

Mineola adult karate questions, answered

What ages are in the Mineola adult class?

18 and over. Little Ninja covers 3 to 5, the kids class 6 to 11 and the teens class 12 to 17, so an adult is never training alongside children.

I have never done karate and I am not fit. Will I keep up?

The first class is basics, and everyone in the room was new on their first night. No prior experience and no particular fitness level is required — you start where you actually are and build from there. If you are managing an injury or a condition, tell the instructor and your doctor first.

Is the adult class in the same building as the after-school program?

Yes — 130 W. Broad St, Mineola, TX 75773. The afternoon program and the evening kids, teens and adult karate classes all run at that address, so a parent can make one trip.

Can an adult also do XMA, weapons training or competition teams?

Yes. Those are open to any student in our kids, teens or adults classes — no tryout and no invitation needed — and they run as separate scheduled classes at all three academies. Call 903-494-7040 for the days they currently meet in Mineola.

How much does the adult class cost?

We do not publish pricing on the website because it depends on the plan you choose. Call 903-494-7040 and we will go through the current options — the trial class is free either way.
