The six-to-eleven class at our Buffalo St academy
Our Gilmer kids class is for children aged 6 to 11, and it runs at 202 Buffalo St — the same building where our Gilmer after-school program meets and where the teen and adult classes train. Students learn traditional karate technique, practical self-defense, and partner drills, taught by black belt instructors. There is a bow-in, a warm-up, technique in steps, and correction when something is wrong. It is a karate class in a martial arts academy, and children this age know the difference between that and a supervised hour.
The age band matters more in a town the size of Gilmer than people expect. Children in this class see each other at school, at church, at the ball field — and then they line up together and get corrected in front of one another. Learning to take a correction from an instructor while your friends watch, and to keep going afterwards, is not a small thing to learn at eight years old. That is the part of this class that travels outside the building.
A nervous beginner is not thrown in. They bow in, line up, and are shown what to do before they are asked to do it. New students are taught the same first steps as every other new student, and nobody is expected to walk in already knowing a stance.
Gilmer families also have the after-school program in this building: transportation provided from school, then snack, gametime, and homework help, serving Gilmer, Harmony, and New Diana schools. That is the afternoon. The kids class is the karate instruction, and it follows the same belt curriculum — so a child who does both is working on the same material at a different hour.
