Adults in Gilmer who come back to karate

Our Gilmer adult class is for students 18 and over at 202 Buffalo St, the same building where our Gilmer kids and teens classes train. It is traditional karate taught by black belt instructors — stances, blocks, strikes, kicks, forms, partner work and practical self-defense — with belt and stripe tests marking progress.

A lot of the adults who train here did karate as children and stopped somewhere around high school. They remember the bow, the line-up, the first kata, and they are not sure how much of it they still have. The answer is usually: enough to start again. Nobody is asked to begin from zero or to prove what they used to know — you pick up where you actually are and the instructor takes it from there.

For adults who have never trained at all, the first class is the same first class everybody else had: bow in, warm up, basics taught in steps. No prior experience is required and no fitness level is required. Gilmer is a small town and this is a local academy rather than a franchise, so the people you train with are people you already see around town.

The Buffalo St building also runs our after-school program for Gilmer, Harmony and New Diana schools. That means a working parent can collect a child in the afternoon and train in the same building, or come back in the evening and train while the child is in the kids class. One address, one trip.

Who the Gilmer adult class is for

It is for adults 18 and over in Gilmer — and in Harmony, New Diana and the towns around them, if the drive into town fits your week — whether you trained as a child and stopped or have never done karate at all. If you are 12 to 17, ask about the teens class; if your child is 6 to 11, the kids class.

It is not a weight-loss program, a boot camp or medical advice. It is a karate class, and it is physical: you will sweat and you will get fitter doing it, but the fitness comes attached to the skill rather than being the thing we sell. If you are carrying an injury or managing a condition, tell the instructor before your first class and speak to your doctor about what you are cleared to do.

Inside the class

What a Gilmer adult class involves

The shape of the class, without a schedule we cannot keep up to date.

  • Technique, corrected

Stances, blocks, strikes, kicks and forms, taught in steps and repeated until they hold up. An instructor tells you exactly what is wrong with a technique and how to fix it — that correction is what you pay attention to, not a mirror.

  • Practical self-defense

Distance, positioning and a first response, drilled with a partner. It is honest training rather than a list of moves to memorise, and it is not a promise that a few weeks of classes makes anyone safe in every situation.

  • Fitness without the sales pitch

The class is physical and an adult gets fitter doing it. We will not dress it up as a weight-loss program or hand out medical advice; the fitness arrives with the skill.

  • Control, with an instructor watching

Partner work teaches you to stop a technique short. Karate is physical and bumps happen — control is the skill being taught, and an instructor is watching the pair.

  • Three things an adult can add on

XMA, weapons training and competition teams are open to any student in our kids, teens or adults classes — no tryout, no invitation needed — and they run as separate scheduled classes at all three academies, Gilmer included. Our students compete at NASKA and PROMAC events. Call 903-494-7040 for which are running now.

Class days and times are not printed here because they change. If you are driving in from Harmony or New Diana, call 903-494-7040 first so you are not making the trip on the wrong evening.

Questions adults ask

Gilmer adult karate questions, answered

What ages are in the Gilmer adult class?

18 and over. The teens class covers 12 to 17 and the kids class 6 to 11, so adults train with adults — and a student who turns 18 moves up rather than becoming the oldest person in a teenagers' class.

I did karate as a kid and quit. Can I start again at 40?

Yes, and you will not be the only one — plenty of the adults in this room did exactly that. Tell the instructor what you remember and what you do not, and they will start you where you actually are rather than at the beginning or too far ahead.

We are out past Harmony. Is the adult class worth the drive into Gilmer?

That is a question for your family and your week, not something a web page should answer for you. The academy is on Buffalo St in town. Call 903-494-7040 for the current class days before you commit to a regular drive.

Can an adult also do XMA, weapons training or competition teams?

Yes. Those are open to any student in our kids, teens or adults classes — no tryout and no invitation needed — and they run as separate scheduled classes at all three academies. Call 903-494-7040 for the days they currently meet in Gilmer.

How much does the adult class cost?

We do not publish pricing on the website because it depends on the plan you choose. Call 903-494-7040 and we will go through the current options — the trial class is free either way.
